What is unusual in this project? A National Park is creating! -
on a territory, where the floral and faunal richness is great: 909
highest plants, 9 reptiles, 45 mammals, and 188 bird species. The
park will border upon the Ukrainian National Park, but that is no
rarity nowadays. Perhaps, the commons comes to its end at this point.
Here lies the border of three biogeographic regions: Danube Forest-steppe
Podollya-Moldova Forest-steppe and Azov-Black Sea Steepe, and also
the azonal wetland ecosystems of the Dniester River, and bird migratory
way passes here as well. The territory is inhabited by 12 animal
species of the World Red List (IUCN, 2000), 5 species use it regularly
during the migration, and 8 rare fish species are found in the river.
Besides, them can also be met not less than 30 species of both Moldovan
and Ukrainian Red Data Book.
All
that is despite the fact that the locality is strongly transformed
by human activity: more than 2/3 of lands are appropriated for agriculture
and settlements. At the same time the local population supports
creation of the National Park! People were settling here since olden
days (40 archeological memorials of quite various times and peoples
am revealed on the area of 60 000 ha), however the main changes
have happened during the last century.
Recently the ecological degradation threatens rural lands and wild
nature, and improvements will be mutual as well. Therefore the Global
Environmental Facility has allotted a grant, and the World
Bank has drawn means of the International
Development Association for rural credits. The crediting rate
becomes the negative if practical activities for wildlife preservation
take place.
The
project is aimed to create a National Park and a local Ecological
Network, to rehabilitate the nature and to arrange collaboration,
to develop eco- and agro-tourism. There are different interesting
things to look here: old-growth wetland forest with a great many
bats and river panoramas, vivid clearings in the oak forest, steppe
end marshlands. There are friendly people and Purcari vine, and
near in Ukraine - a sea resort district.
The National Park has to become the core area of the international
importance within the National and the Pan-European Ecological Networks.
